9 mpg average. Fully puts the 01 dmax at 15-16.
Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
Add up oil changes and fuel additive on that diesel.

Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
I'd be putting less than 5000 miles a year so maintenance would not be that huge.

Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
Kind of why I wonder if a 6.0 with the 4l80e, although not ideal, might be worth it since I can get them cheap enough.

The 6.0 will do it. You want the Allison trans. Find a 6.0 with the Allison. Lol.

Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
Engine is not my concern. 6.0 would dog on a few hills but not enough that I think I would hate it. Biggest concern is the transmission.
4l80e is not a bad one, just not as good as the Allison. Not sure if anyone ever modified a 6.0/allison to fit together.
EDIT: apparently huge parasitic loss behind the 6.0 if you try to use the Allison, so no one does it.
Pick up a Ford yet?
I have mixed feels on Fords honestly.
I am a GM guy. Always have been. Owned 3 silverados and a ram. Drove ford a lot for work. Never really liked them. Great work trucks, but not comfortable for me like a GM is.
That and the only fords I would be interested in might be the 2015+ and those are $. Don't like older fords from around 2000-mid 2010s.

Seriously. Get a nice tow vehicle right before you need it. Get where you are going, sell it and get what you need again. You are good about this anyways.

Just so I don't lose the link.
Mpg is comparable to 6.0 gm trucks but more reliable? Don't know enough about these engines - school me? Worth it over 6.0 gasser?

Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
That thing will walk all over a 6.0 in mpg once you open up the intake and exhaust.
Make sure it's a powerstroke and not an idi-t. It should be being a 96 but you never know and they didn't give an engine shot.
I say that because we have a customer with a 95 idi-t and he thought he was getting a powerstroke. It was advertised as a powerstroke.
It's not that the idi is bad... It's just the 305 of the diesel truck world. (The gm 6.5 would be the iron duke)

Re: Going to need a tow/haul rig
My problem is that I really don't want to spend that much money but it's looking like I might not have a choice unless I just get something good enough for now that I know I'll replace with something better in a couple of years.

02 f350 srw with 7.3 diesel. $10k.
Oregon salvage title though from 2006. But has since has another 100k put on it?
