New wrx in 2022? And what the STI takes a year after that? Whats the subi rumor mill thinking? They happy? Are they getting better or worse as the years go by? Is it ever worth it to wait for the sti or can you add a boost controller and be almost there power level wise?

Re: Alright subi peeps
According to the so called Subaru faithful the wrx is always getting worse. The official reveal is in mid August. Rumors are the WRX will get around 300hp and the STi will have around 350. Both are expected to get a version of the 2.4 DIT similar to the one in the Outback XT and Ascent. The STi usually gets its higher HP from a slightly bigger turbo running more boost. A good tune on a WRX can usually get you close to STi power levels. However the cost difference between the two is more about the rest of the drive train and suspension than just the engine. Historically the STi transmission and diffs are much more advanced than the in WRX. Consider the 15-21 WRX uses open front and rear diffs, and the center diff is a viscous unit. Whereas the STi gets mechanical LSD front and rear with an electronically controlled central diff.

I like the 2.4 turbo in the wilderness. The cvt however ruins some of the fun. 0-60 in 6 seconds in an outback is surprising and with vdc off I can spin the tires easily. Lots of torque steer too. Not noticeable when vdc is working.
That said a tune that puts it over 300 hp would make a fun car. It's right at about 260 hp and 277 tq. In a lighter car it would be awesome.

I think I would like the ride in the wrx more as I get older though.
What is the best wrx then if they are always getting worse?

I tell you what, my escape is low 7s and is fun to drive. Is yours really in the 6 seconds? Honestly your car maybe my next one then.

The Outback Wilderness accelerated from 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds, and through the quarter mile in 14.7 seconds at 96.1 mph. That's only 0.2 second behind our long-term 2020 Outback Onyx XT (previously the most off-road-capable Outback) in the 0-60-mph test, and just 0.1 second behind (but 0.2 mph faster than) the Outback Onyx in the quarter-mile. We suspect the Outback Wilderness' revised CVT "gears" and 17-inch wheels help the off-roader make up some speed in the quarter.

Honestly they don't ride all that different, but the STi is noticeable stiffer.
The "best" is kind of a loaded question and highly subjective. In terms of actual performance numbers and capabilities the current generation is the best. Meanwhile many hardcore people prefer the older ones 05-07. They are more nimble lighter and more basic. The only truly bad one is 08 it has the same small turbo as the earlier ones in a significantly heavier car and the suspension is far too soft. 09-10 got the bigger turbo and revised suspension. 11-14 had hatch available in both WRX and STi.
