No start causes

Post by DCIV »

I hate threads like this. Normally I have no problem tracking down the issue I’m having but I need some help.

It doesn’t even try. Fuel pump kicks on.

No sound from either the mfi relay or even a noise from the starter.

All other accessories power up and work great, new battery and tied into a charger.

Clutch pushed in (man card removed here as first couple attempts I forgot you have to as my vr4 it’s disabled.)

Tried factory ecu and 99 flashed ecu.

I’m guessing everyone is gonna say starter, I couldn’t really get to it from where the car is so I would like other thoughts. Again, did not even try and turn over. No sounds other than fuel pump.

Thoughts.

Well, you can't get fuel pump activity without MFI relay working, so it ain't that.

What's the background here? Were you working on it and now it doesn't start, or it worked fine yesterday and suddenly doesn't start? Need a little history to consider likely causes.

4 years ago I drove it to where I pulled the injectors out to make my vr4 run by removing the injectors. Then it sat.

Since we're gonna guess...

Starter, ignition switch, battery, battery terminals, wiring to starter, clutch switch.

I would recommend getting a second pair of hands and start pulling around with a volt meter while trying to crank.

easy to power a lot of shit if you are barely contacting but not enough to power the starter.

I recently had this issue with my Stealth. Turned out to be the ignition switch (from a shotty aftermarket alarm install), and the starter(real root cause).

You can take the little wire that runs to the starter under the MAF (the click click start fix wire) and jump it straight to the positive battery terminal. If it doesn’t turn over it’s the starter. I did this to confirm my starter was bad.

I wanted to do the starter. The car is not on concrete though so I have to wait. Sucks that I have to use another vehicle to pull it into concrete to work under it, then address the problem.

Hopefully it doesn't have to be pulled up the hill...

You can check if the starter is bad easily doing what I said. If it turns over (don't worry the car won't start), then it's not the starter, and you can check the other things said in this thread.

I will when it’s not raining and cold.

I towed the other vr4 up the hill after I built. This one could be done too. Even easier with my 2 wheel low switch on the avalanche. This really might happen as I’m tired of it getting dark early and being so cold. But then it would prob take the place of my escape and that would suck.
