Anyway, back to Corvette stuff. Chevy confirmed the C8R has a 5.5L DOHC V8 with a flat plane crank.

The road version will have to be somewhat similar for homologation purposes. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out. From what I've read, flat plane engines are limited in displacement due to vibration. That limits horsepower. I can't imagine GM would do a Z06 with less power than the last one.
The C7R was homologated as a Z06 despite having an NA engine, so it's possible the street version will be boosted. I don't know nearly enough about FPC engines to know how that would play out though.

I think about all the things we could have done, all the miracles we could have achieved, if we were all just a little bit better than it turns out we are.

If you haven't heard it yet, you need to. Skip to 0:45 if you're impatient. I can't believe how fast it revs. Obviously the street car won't be quite the same, but it's still pretty interesting.

For homolgatiom they tend to care more about the chassis than the power plant as long as teh power plant is 'production based.'
Except for Porsche, they can do whatever they want apparently.

Porsche has a production based engine. It's just not in a production based location.

I'm sure they've done everything they can to reduce reciprocating weight in their race motors. Sounds kinda like my old GSXR-750 racebike with how quick it revs. Very nice!

Yeah they are the one manufacturer where you can basically walk in and buy a street car with almost the exact same engine I'll give you that. The current 911RSR chassis is barely based on any road going car. It's kind of like a Cayman GTS with full 911 body work.

The vibration can be minimized, but at some added expense. I'd bet the Z06 will have 600ish hp, but because of the mid-engine layout, it'll outperform the old Z06 in every way. The GT350 gets 526hp our of 5.2L, so I don't think 600ish hp N/A out of a 5.5L is too far out of the question.
Boosting it won't be a problem either, Ferrari uses FPCs in both NA and boosted applications. I'd say a FPC is actually better for boosting, because you get equal exhaust pulses to each side due to the firing order. Also as a note, pretty much every inline 4 cylinder out there uses a FPC (hence why most have balance shafts), so a V8 with a FPC is basically just 2 inline 4s connected together.

A neighbor of mine has a GT350. I'm not that into Mustangs, but when he revs that thing, holy shit my pants get too tight.

Hannibalzero: Whoa, Jeffro and Melis in the same thread? Did we somehow enter a timewarp back to 2008?

The press embargo wasn't supposed to be up until tomorrow, but I guess MT doesn't care.

I'm just not sure I can consider a 90k Z51 base Corvette a bargain anymore. Yes it still performs with cars costing significantly more, but 90k isn't a bargain.

"A bargain" is always relative. 90K is definitely a bargain compared to let's say 200K.
Re: 2020 C8 Corvette Stringray
GM is playing the Porsche game with options. Start the base car low, and then never actually sell anyone a base car. One of the articles on the forum claims you can get it up to roughly $110k if you check every possible option box. It's insane.
I had a feeling this was coming when I saw how they pimped out the C7 Z06. But they seem to have sold a shitload of them. So what do I know? :d ontknow:

Re: 2020 C8 Corvette Stringray
I've said it before, though.. 90% of the options are not needed that 90% of the buyers put on there. So why not take their money if they are willing to waste it?
Re: 2020 C8 Corvette Stringray
They know most people will just buy one now instead of being willing to wait months for a stripped out one.
I highly doubt any dealer will order a base base c8 to put on the floor

Re: 2020 C8 Corvette Stringray
Wow, the numbers are real. That's crazy... I might not even need to get a forced induction version. That might change things. Hmmm. I was pretty much set on just keeping my C7 and maybe doing a supercharger, but I guess we'll see what happens. I don't think I want to go through the crazy ordering shenanigans I went through for the C7, so will probably wait until they are more available before getting something.
But my wife wants a Tesla Model X P100D in place of the Volt, and we are probably looking at replacing our Avalanche with something new soon as well.

There's a lot of base (or near-base) C7s out there... Obviously they want to build the high-dollar ones first to maximize profits, but for anyone who is willing to wait a couple years - they can get a Z51 Stingray for around $70k.

From a Volt to a P100D. That is quite a change.. But ugh Model X is so ugly.

Yeah and I get that, but affordability is part of that to me. One could easily argue a Ford GT is a bargain because it is essentially a street legal race car. IE they designed a race car and then made it street legal.
To me the thing about the corvette was it was attainable. With, as Jeff mentioned, the Porsche philosophy on options now it's going to drive the price up to where it's no longer really attainable.

Just don't throw a bunch of options on it that you frankly don't need
