I can't leave the key in my Focus, or in our Explorer. It won't let us lock the doors. Maybe it has to be somewhere specific?

Out of curiosity, I tried that with my C7 last summer. I removed the metal key and tried to lock the fob in the car. It wouldn't let me. So I wrapped it in tin foil and put in the corner storage bin in the trunk. Then it let me lock the car. But when I opened it with the metal key, the alarm went off. So that was a little annoying.

I need to figure out how to make a 'dumb' key that I can get wet. Say, when I go to a pool or water park and don't want to get a locker.

Also my wife’s key fob will let her lock one in her car.

I ran into a similar issue with my Ram. Has keyless entry and start. Went Kayaking with some friends and didnt want to take the fob with me. Luckily Chryslers keys have a metal key that ejects, but there is no key opening in the door, or ignition. There are however key openings for the Ram boxes. Found out I could put my key fob at the furthest rearward point of the box, lock it, and walk off with my metal key without the keyless doors working (fob far enough away from sensors).

I discovered by accident that the following scenario will leave you stranded in the CTS:
- Drive to workout location.
- Park and exit vehicle with key fob.
- Close door and it will lock.
- Open hatch to remove bike.
- Leave key fob on the floor of the trunk while changing into cycling shoes.
- Close hatch.
- Curse.

My Lancer freaks out if I try to lock the FOB in the car. It won't even let me lock it with it running and I have the key outside.

For Ford cars, AA-ron, press the bottom two buttons at the same time to override the don't lock yourself out feature.

The hatch on the Explorer and ST use the FOB, and you can't have this happen either. I tried to lock the fob in the trunk, no dice.

On the FOB, or the door keypad? I know the bottom 2 buttons on the door keypad lock the doors, didn't realize it would do it with the FOB in the car though. This is really good information!

Doorpad, trust me- ran into this problem too and it overrides that feature and it's hard to find.

Has to be at the same time though.

And for what it's worth, when the doorpad doesn't work (like if you have interference from another stronger signal at the same frequency) you can slide the key out and pop the cap off the door and let yourself in manually.

There's an RFID in the arm rest, you can place the keyfob in that case. I had to do that once.

I like my dumb doorpad. Hard wired.

This is hardwired, just capacitive touch hard wired. I meant to actually say hands free door lock.

The doorpad always works if the vehicle has a battery.

Oh. I was thinking they went to the wireless they were offering as retrofit options as long as you had rke back in the early 00s.

So if I wanted to get a second key, as I only have one and the valet key. Is there a cheap way to do that? Or just use my buddy at AAA that says it’s about 100 bucks.

Well that is how you lock it from the doorpad outside, so I've done it a few times, just didn't know you could do it with the FOB in the car! That is really good to know.

I had to use the RFID once when the battery got low in my remote. It had enough juice to let me open the door, but not enough for the car to recognize the key was in there. Set the key on the RFID pad, drove straight to Walmart and bought a battery
