[quote=""DCIV""]How do you know that’s a shim and not just a head gasket? Looks like all the holes are pretty dang perfect for a shim. Only real reason for a shim is lower CR. NA cars been doing that for years when going turbo.

That was my thought and why I checked the deck surface of both the head and the block. Looked all within tolerance. When I strapped the HG’s on I got the timing set and spun the motor around to see if it would free spin. All went well so I finished wrapping it up.

Weekend Update:

Had a lot of other things going on this weekend with the family, so not much accomplished. I did however look into swapping out the rear bumpers on my 89 and my 95 SR and I think I can make it work with a little welding. Will have to see. Also changed out the frothy oil from the leaky head gasket. Running some nice 15W-40 now.

Got the chance to take her out on the road a little (sloppy as hell with those huge tires) as well as climb my favorite little mountain for a photo shoot. 4x4 worked great but im pretty sure this rig still only has an open rear diff. Managed to climb some steep cliffs and scare the crap out of myself though. I thought the Jeep was fun. The SWB might just take the cake.

Still needs some suspension, tires, brake upgrades along the way, but im starting to get attached to this little thing.

Yea sunny and 72 degrees. Oddly enough there was a Cherokee full of Highschool girls right next to me. They were like “that dude drove all the way up here to snap a photo of his car?” I was like...YEA, see this view!

Nah. I still have to try to finish the 3s before I even think about another project. Would be cool to do a 4g swap on it though.

She looks real clean. Looks like he did a several inch body lift. Probably one of the guys on the forums.

Mind snagging his muffler for me?

Yeah it had a decent body lift. No suspension.

Had a glass pack but I can cut the muffler off my 91 before it goes if you want.

Ah.

Don't take this personally. Just an observation...

Why are people so afraid to just go to a real exhaust shop? (Not Midas) getting a system built isn't terribly expensive and will fit.

Two words. Stainless Steel. It’s expensive compared to regular steel and much stronger. If it were made out of anything else I would think about it. I also don’t want anything else out back in there. The factory exhaust is quite strong and well built so I don’t care to chance something else

My issueI have is that the inlet for the muffler has a weld that broke along the stainless sheet metal it’s constructed from. I’m betting it’s from the last owner wheeling it a little too hard. I may try to weld it up, but it doesn’t look to be easy. Nearly 30 years and 280k miles of abuse and corrosion has paid its toll. Finding a nicer lower mile part would be ideal.

Link worked. Your right, I would have bought that. Cheap enough I could have gotten away with it and I bet I could have fixed it.
