Random 3/s Coop idea

Post by DCIV »

Stupid crazy idea popped into my head. Flip around the head on a 3/s. Prob have to have custom cams. But then let the exhaust come out in the middle. Feed a huge single over the trans. To a fmic and then to two TB that feed each end independent. Bam. No having tons of exhaust piping to make a single work.

Tell me how I’m wrong. Or tell me how it could work. Your choice. Never gonna do it. Just a thought.

That head will need a LOT of work. Then what are you going to do for intakes?

The intake would be a single in intercooler to a two out and two TB’s prob electric. Or split up after it comes up the opening and split.

The heads are reversible so I’m sure it all would work minis figuring out how the timing would have to work. But I’m sure it could. Was just seeing how crazy of idea it is.

Yes. Well not trying just had the idea and wanted to share.

The heads aren't reversible.

Even if they were, that would be a crazy amount of heat in a very confined space between the heads. Trading exhaust complexity for intake complexity. Not sure that's a good trade.

Why arnt they reversible? Been a while since I had a head off but I’m pretty sure it looks the same?

Yes obvious flaws in my thinking...so is putting a single on a 3/s. (IMO). Don’t think about the heat. Think if it could work.

Well, look at the headgasket that Steve posted. It isn't a symmetrical gasket - the coolant and oil passages are sort of all over the place and oddly shaped.

Could it work? Yes. Is it worth exploring because of the obstacles? No.

If you move your intakes to the outside of the heads, you also need to move fuel rails down there, have some sort of intake plenum on each side, dual throttle bodies that have to be synchronized, shitloads of heat to deal with (in an area that's adjacent to your timing belt)...

I'm just not seeing it.

If you want a single, better bet is likely to do a 4G swap. Then you don't have to do any of the crazy work-arounds, and you get a lot cheaper parts to play with and more room to fit it all in.

I don’t want a single. I just can’t help these thoughts that come into my head. lol.

Yup a duel feed to an fuel rail would be needed. Didn’t think of that. And totally the intake would be more a pain then it is now. Lol.

And I’m 99% sure the heads are switchable. I thought I did it but obviously the intake and exhaust ports wouldn’t be the same. So no I didn’t. Hmmmmm.

[quote=""DCIV""]And I’m 99% sure the heads are switchable as I think I did it because of a bolt that broke off in one. Now I want to know if they are rotatable.

They are reversible between banks, but not reversible on one bank, i.e. you can put the front head on the rear bank, but you can't just turn the front head 180° and put it back on the front bank. All V-engines are setup this way.

They are. As Aaron said the heads are the same casting so they could be swapped in theory.

As for the heat... Other than knock sensor I don't see a problem. It's been done with both gas and Diesel. Ford 6.7 is. I'm pretty sure some vw and BMW are too.

Bingo, heads wont mount upside down (180 deg) on the block.
