Re: The Grand Tour
Is it possible the cinematography has gotten better than it was on the BBC show?
I don't know what the word is for it, but some of those shots reminded me of something you'd see in a movie. Something about the sharpness or the camera stability.
After rumors that their intro video alone cost $3.2M to shoot, it wouldn't surprise me if they upgraded everything else.

I think it has. Guess that's what happens when Amazon is willing to spend how ever much money they feel like.
I watched this trailer last night, and I am quite excited for the show to start

Great interview with James and Jeremy. Richard was out due to 'dehydration'
Read it and you'll understand.

At one point I think they really hit on exactly what it is that makes Top Gear, and hopefully The Grand Tour, work. I've been saying this for a while. It's about having fun. I've said that's when the US Top Gear finally started to work, but it was too late. It was when the hosts stated having fun with each other. That's why the new incarnation of Top Gear doesn't work. At least, not yet. There's a glimmer of hope with Chris Harris and Rory Reid and Sabine Schmidt. I'm still on the fence about Matt though...

At the end, James really hit on another part I hadn't considered. It's not just that they're having fun...it's that they're having fun on our behalf.
Autoblog: After all the success and all the fame, what keeps you motivated these days?
James May: Having a good time
Jeremy Clarkson: Every morning we have a better time than almost everyone else in the world.
James May: There's no other reason. You couldn't actually be motivated by fame. It's irrelevant. And not by needing more money to spend, because I don't spend it all anyway. But actually having a good life is such a privilege.
Autoblog: You're still having fun?
James May: Oh, yeah.
Jeremy Clarkson: Honestly, we were sitting the other day in a traffic jam in Liverpool, and we looked into a computer shop. There was somebody there with a purple shirt, flogging laptops on a wet, cold, dark November night. We just thought, "God, we're lucky." I still think of him every time they make me do something, you just think, "We genuinely have the best jobs in the world. We really, really do." I just can't think of anything I'd rather do.
James May: Even fighter pilot isn't as good. You get more sex, but it's not as much fun.
Jeremy Clarkson: Right.
James May: Hopefully we can sort of have fun on other people's behalf. That's part of the objective, so they can have it vicariously. Even though the next day they've got to go back to the computer shop, and ... with a purple shirt ...

Re: The Grand Tour
My problem is that I think they went away from having fun to some regard to becoming over the top caricatures of themselves. Especially Jeremy.
Re: The Grand Tour
Watched the first episode tonight. The BBC is going to be pissed. This pretty much picked up where Top Gear left off. Hopefully the cast changes help keep new Top Gear competitive with GT. The world would be a better place with two really good car focused shows.
Overall it was good. They need to replace the new racing driver, or at least re-script him as something other than an over the top, negative stereotype. It'd be one thing if he was funny, but he absolutely wasn't.
I could have done without the potshots at the BBC (although the intro was beautiful). Hopefully after the first 2-3 episodes they'll have gotten that out of their system so they can focus on doing their own thing.
The tent idea is brilliant. I'm looking forward to seeing how that plays out. The new track is pretty crazy too. There's NO runoff room.
I'm also glad they're not releasing it all at once. At least for me, a big part of good TV and movies is the anticipation. You lose that when you can binge the whole thing.

Re: The Grand Tour
I watched it tonight as well, and don't disagree with you on any points. Loved the intro, the car portions were great, the new track looks "interesting". The racing driver for the M2 segment had some lame-ass lines, though it looked like he was working that M2 around the track pretty well.
Looking forward to coming episodes!

Re: The Grand Tour
We watched it tonight. Liked it a lot. Not so much the driver like you two said, but really enjoyed the rest. Can't wait to see how they do as they find their new groove.
Re: The Grand Tour
Did anyone else think the front end on Clarkson's Mustang looked more than a little Audi-ish?

Re: The Grand Tour
Great first episode and agree with everyone else. Intro was awesome. "nascar" driver needs a stig helmet and no talking. Loved the track. They all had too many one-liners that they were trying too hard for. The fight with the crowd got old very quickly.
If it gets more refined and settles in, it's going to be amazing. BBC who?

Re: The Grand Tour
Highly disappointed in the second episode.
Re: The Grand Tour
The wife and I needed a new series....I told her I had watched enough of her choices and I picked this one. Lots of explaining but good first show...I hope they don't take shots at BBC all the time too. But loved everything about the show.
Hate to hear you were disappointed in the second....why? No spoilers, just what made it suck?

Re: The Grand Tour
Everything about it . Honestly only the first car they reviewed was good. Then the rest was horrible in my opinion.
Toss in a little edit to this. The first car and their "car news" segment was good. The "celebrity" thing, and the Jordan thing sucked. Really bad. I actually debated on turning it off. Kept hoping it would get better but before I knew it, the show was over.
