Are you saying mitsubishi offered different variants of the lsd? Also I thought you wanted a street gears. 4.22 with 31" tires should put you in the sweet spot.

If the Ford 9" gears work then that opens up more options. It also could open up a slew of lockers/lsd options.

There's 4 rear differential types.

Open diff
Mechanical LSD (plate type, what we have)
Hybrid LSD (viscous + Torsen)
Locker

Then there's more variations based on what size axle you have. 8", 9" and 9.5". If you're planning to boost your engine, I'd probably shoot for the 9.5" axle regardless of what diff you end up using.

Hmm the Torsen would be the best candidate. I have one of those for my Dana 44. Excellent life and serviceability. Much better than the plate type. Are you showing those only available for the 9.5 rear? What years and trims carried them?

I'm not hung up on the strength of the 9.0 vs the 9.5. Our 3s's came with the 8.0 which is our front diff and they have handled far more power then I will ever be able to put into one. And if they are the same dimensions as the Ford 9" big and small bearing then we will surely never come close to breaking one. Those rears are as stout as they get.

As for boosting. No plans yet. Need to get the NA going first. Also, as you may have already noticed there is no room for an IC.

The hybrid is even better than a Torsen. A Torsen is a torque multiplying diff. If one wheel is on ice, it has zero traction. 0 times anything is still 0, so your LSD is no good in those situations.

The hybrid has a VCU to pre-load the worm gears and allow for some torque multiplication even when one wheel has no traction. It really sounds like an ideal differential for on road and occasional off road.

It was available for both the 9 and 9.5 rears, and was optional on the XLS and Limited. I've been putting VINs into ASA and I think I know how to see if it was factory equipped, but some of the part data is contradictory. The only way to know 100% for sure if a truck has it is to crawl underneath and look at the sticker. It doesn't look like they did the telltale orange sticker on the door frame.

No wonder my car gets uncontrollably sideways during acceleration. Thought there was something wrong with my diff.

See this even now in the DD Miata with the Torsen swap. It didn't improve low traction handling at all.

This is good news. The off road guys got around that with the standard torsen by modulating the brake pedal to split the power across the axle. Having that LSD would be quite handy.

I worry that none or few of those were build for the 9". Sounds like newer tech that only the 9.5 was able to take advantage of. Also too bad you cant verify it by a door sticker. Not all of those rear axle stickers are legible.

It's not all that new. There's the mythical hybrid LSD for the 3S that goes back to the early 90s.

I've already seen two trucks that passed through my yards that allegedly had that diff. Both were RWD 3.0s.

Right now I'm really fighting the temptation to piece together bits from two trucks that are sitting here. One is a 2000, 2WD 3L with the hybrid diff. I'd grab the 3rd member from that, and then get the brakes and the whole front and rear 4.64 axle assemblies from the 99 4WD 3L that I got my rims from.

I've got suspension stuff coming from Rock Auto. Tires are next week. If I get these other parts, that would take care of my gearing, brakes, and and maintenance. That's about 50% of what I want from the truck as far as mechanicals. The other 50% is the engine and a rebuilt tranny.

Shoot, that would make the rear axle swap worthwhile. Is the 3L Hybrid diff a 9" though? If not i would just grab that one as the 2wd rears have the proper leaf spring setup and your discs already installed. Are the ratios the same?

4WD prior to 2000 is leaf spring as well. As best I can tell, 3.0 is 9", regardless of year.

2000+ got coil springs for everything. 3.0 got drum brakes. 3.5 kept the discs.

Ratios are different between the two trucks I have my eye on. 4.90 on the 2WD and 4.64 on the 4WD.

You might be interested in this. One of the yards has a 2003 XLS 4WD in the processing area. I'll run the VIN once it hits the lot, but there's a good chance it has the 9.5" hybrid rear.
