My harmonic balancer went out...

Post by vegasidol »

Gack! My harmonic balancer on the VR4 ripped apart at the rubber seal. One accessory belt shredded. the other just came off.

It's all back together with another balancer and new belts...but I'm wondering how common this is?

Anyone else have this problem?

Its actually fairly common. Make sure the new one is on right with the pin lined up and you should be good to go.

Thus why I have a 3SX pulley on my car. My stock pulley ripped apart at about 110K.

Happenned at 168k to my n/a Stealth R/T. I went with the unorthodox racing underdrive pulley as a replacement--I like my headlights DIM. :suspect2:

I don't dislike 3Sx (in fact, Steve is a good friend and I talk to him regularly). I just don't like a couple of his workers. He helped me out when I was doing my TT conversion by sending me a full set of poly motor mounts without any kind of deposit for my old mounts, and gave me a nice discount on the mounts themselves. I've purchased a few items from 3SX, and will most likely purchase more in the future. That pulley of theirs is a prime example of something they have that no one else does. It's a nice piece. :)
(and for the record, I know you were joking - just wanted to say something nice about one of the most controversial shops in the 3S world)

When I doing my 120K (at 112 because my water pump took a dump), I was pulling the belts off when I noticed my pulley looked weird. pulled it off to take a better look and it was completely seperated. I don't know what was keeping it together while on the car. I put the 3SX pulley on the next weekend and no worries since. 164K and counting. :D

This happened to somebody else on 3si just a week or two ago. He had some pretty nasty pics of the pulley and belts. Look at the bright side - at least there wasn't a lot of damage, and it is easy to replace. :)

yeah its kind of common, i mean look at the age of our cars. I wouldnt run a lightweight one if your going to be trying to make any type of huge power.

Its already been determined that running without a harmonic dampner above the 500HP levels can cause accelerated bearing wear. Harmonics are NEVER a good thing when it comes to high loads and power.

Stock pulleys for me. I tend to try and stray people away from one peice pulleys, Yeah I had one for a while but it was only because I was in a pinch and needed something to get my car back on the road.

I had an aluminum pulley on my TT and I recommend them only if you need ANY pulley, on stock and BPU cars

Like ^ stated, maybe not higher HP cars
Any small things can be amplified as power levels go up

I agree with coop. If you n/a looking to squeeze some extra power out of it then sure I guess its ok. Maybe even BPU TT power but anything extra and I wouldn't risk having an unbalanced pulley.

Is there a study posted on the internet somewhere? I wouldn't mind reading some more info on it if there is.

It's surprising to see how many people don't know that the harmonic balancer needs to be replaced every 120K. Think the only reason that is because they don't come appart as often as say... waterpump failures or spun bearings.

Everyone really should make it a point to look at their crank pulleys when doing a timing belt. The visual signs of it coming appart are obvious if you think to look at it.
