Power steering line leak

Got a leak in my 4WS line yesterday. I was backing up and heard a loud hiss, then the 4ws light came on. I wasn't far from the house, but it started groaning pretty loud while steering home.

Got the car up and took a photo while turning the wheel left. You can see the spray from the leak in the first photo. No leak while turning right.

Took the line out, there is a TON of rust under the rubber jacket.


I can't seem to find what this part is in my hard copy manual. What is it and where should I look for a new (used?) one. I haven't tried looking in CAPS yet, went right from the taking out the line to work.

There are three sections for steering listed in the manual. 1) Power steering 2) 4 wheel steering, and 3) 4 wheel steering - active (not in the manual)

What's the difference between 4 wheel steering and 4 wheel steering - active? Isn't the VR4 'active' and if so, why isn't in the manual?

Also, it says to use Dextron II atx fluid for the power steering fluid. Should I use Dextron III or do you recommend something else. The fluid in the system was yellow, and the atx is red, so I was curious...

I have always used dextron III, take the part to autozone and they can at least tell you what it is. Or get someone that is really good with caps to find it for you.

Think I finally found something. Probably would have found this if I had more time to have looked through the manual properly.

Power steering hydraulic pressure line to the rear control valve. (control piping/cylinder tube) ?

Edit: Look at that...dug my way through CAPS.

LethalVR4 did an AWS delete to his car. Wouldn't hurt to ask if he still has that line.

I will be deleting it too in the 98 but not in the next few weeks.

The way that it's made...with water being able to just sit under the jacket, I'm surprised that this isn't a more common problem. I was thinking about replacing both lines, but I'm told the pressure line tends to go way before the return, (pressure line...imagine that? ) so I'll probably just replace the one.

What kind of condition are they in? Really rusty under the jacket or decent? These are the pressure/return lines that run next the brake lines?


Edit: GD! DiscountMitsu estimated a $15-20 shipping charge and Rockville estimated a $50-90 shipping charge!

i think these are the lines. ill have to crawl under my 97 to make sure. its been nearly a year since i pulled them off my 91. as for condition...they appear perfect. ill pull the rubber back and double check the clamp fitting to make sure there is no rust under there.

Norco has always been good to me, but of course, I can just drive over there if necessary.

Here is what I just did to fix the opposite end of those tubes (from what I could tell on the caps diagram). It requires 4 compression union fittings (9/16th inch) and 2 feet of 9/16th inch brake line. Get a tubing cutter and cut off the metal hard line on each side of the rubber line (getting rid of the stock fitting). Slide on the compression fitting on each end of the cut off tubing. Bend a piece of brake line (1 foot long) and slide compression fittings on both ends. Use the union to join the new tubing with the old and viola... fixed.

Neat idea.

Do the fittings have some kind of rubber seal in them or does the tube itself get crushed between the fittings to make the seal? If it's the ladder, how long would it last under that kind of pressure? Could they withstand pressures as high as 50psi in the case of repairing fuel lines?

Are these available at any hardware store or did you get them from a specialty shop?
