Need advice on reselling used rods

Post by GTO Assassin »

I have a guy here in Oz who needs rods and a crank. My rods are out of my old 190,000 kay engine and the crank is a first gen caster. Here are pics of the rods and bearings from my engine before she went.

I don't want to rip him off, or sell him dodgy parts. I want to know if selling rods like this is ok. I wouldn't sell him the pistons, but rods are ok yes? Is there anything he should do before he puts them in the engine?

Thanks for any help.

Just from the pics, I'd sell him the rods, but tell him new bearings are up to him. Personally, I wouldn't use those bearings

You could always have them spec'd to be sure.

Sweet. Thanks Terry. I'll send them to him and he can get a shop to spec them. There's no need for cryo treating or anything like that. Just a balance and they should be good to go?

Well a shop would be able to make sure they're in spec and check for any cracks.

If you do use a cleaner like that, make sure you spray it down with some kind of lubricant to keep them from rusting.

As long as you didn't spin a rod bearing, the rods will be fine. If there was a rod bearing spun, you can have that rod resized. The crank would probably need a polish job at a minimum judging by the old bearings. If there are any gouges in them, you will need to get it turned down and use some undersized bearings.

yes, you undersize a crank and oversize your pistons. They measure the inside diameter. So, you over bore a block and get oversized pistons. You shave part of your crank (making it smaller diameter) and get undersized bearings to match.
