I know there exists a lower temp. thermostat (180*F I think?), is that an OEM mitsu part? Is a dealer the only place I can pick one up??

Re: Where to buy Thermostat?
Hmmm...interesting...
I just finished having similar problems with my na. Over the winter it wasn't heating properly, no heat at a standstill, but seemed fine when moving. It got warm out at again and I had the na out for about a week, when I came home one afternoon and heard a long high pitch of something decompressing...odd.
I went inside to get something, came back 10 minutes later and it turned over and died. I restarted it and gave it some gas to keep it running...but it was running rough. About 30 secs to a min later it evened out and that's when I noticed that the temp guage was through the roof.
Off. I checked under the car and while there wasn't a coolant puddle, there was definitely drips on the underside of the car.
Checked the coolant. Gone.
Gah! Where'd the coolant go? Well, I already picked up a thermostat at Advance Auto, $15, but that cold snap hit right after and I haven't been back.
I'm confused on the gasket though...does my 1g need a gasket? The store seemed to think I did...

Whenever you use forceful and overt verbal persuasion to try to convince others to see things your way, they're probably not listening to what you say, Instead they're looking for every error in you your logic and mistakes in your facts, all the while constructing counterarguments. Worse still, they don't merely believe you're wrong; they need you to be wrong in order to protect the status quo. And since the final judge exists in their own head, you lose every time. - The Influencer
Is the level of bullshit you have to go through to change things in a direction you want, less than than or equal than the level of current bullshit?
Re: Where to buy Thermostat?
SOHC 6G72s use a gasket. DOHCs don't.
Some of the very early 91 DOHC models show a gasket in CAPS, but the t-stat housing was changed and the gasket was eliminated after only a couple of months of production.

I think about all the things we could have done, all the miracles we could have achieved, if we were all just a little bit better than it turns out we are.
That sounds like a headgasket issue, or the coolant just boiled out from the overflow tank.
This happened AFTER you put in a new thermostat? And it's been fine since?
No...haven't had a chance to put the new thermostat in yet...going to do that first and see what happens.

Re: Where to buy Thermostat?
Never buy stuff from Dodge if you can avoid it. They take Mitsubishi's list price and mark it up another 30% or so.

But Dodge wanted $54 for the thermostat ... Honda wanted $16. LOL. According to Trevor it's the same thing, honda part #19301P08316.
Oh well, I'll try Autozone and AdvanceAuto on the way home, if they can't beat $16 then I'll order it from Honda.
wow, what a rip!
Southgate Mitsu = $12 for the thermostat IIRC. I haven't bought one in close to 4 years, though, so I might be off, but not much.

Re: Where to buy Thermostat?
Really. Well that explains why I've always got much higher quotes from Dodge dealers than Mitsu ones. They use the same part #'s don't they?
The problem is there's a Dodge dealer within walking disance of the apartment, and no Mitsu dealers within 30 miles ...

Rockville Mitsu?

My cost at the Dodge dealer I worked at was consistantly 10% higher than Rockville's prices.
